Yak Socks Qinghai Farmers and Weaving Artisans

2024

Yak is  a long-haired bovine mainly found in the Himalayan region, Tibetan plateau, and some areas of Mongolia and Central Asia. They are the primary source of sustenance and materials for local herders in Qinghai. Yaks are extremely resilient animals and therefore the perfect source of materials in harsh environments on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Harvested from the soft undercoat of the animal, yak fibre has a micron count of 15–20, it is as soft and warm as cashmere, sometimes 30% warmer, but more durable and breathable. In this project, YIQI collaborated with the local herders and weaving artisans to create extremely warm and soft yak socks.
